Black History in Style

                          Black History in Style

I began attending Essence Awards in my late 20’s in the 1980’s when it was hosted at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Essence Magazine did a fabulous job honoring African-American Women who made great strides by enriching our communities through education, science, philanthropy, activism, and the arts. There were women honored of all ages including young women in communities who reached backed and pulled another sister up from the trenches to a safe haven; this is nothing but love. I could literally feel the energy of love in the atmosphere. I commend Essence Magazine for highlighting such incredible women. When I sat near Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and so many greats this was a dream come true. I have experienced and found it to be so special with Essence that there is no division in socioeconomics since the 80’s until present. I’ve always felt at home including Essence Festivals held in New Orleans annually. Everyone’s fashion was stellar of the glitz and glam.

When I received my program in the mail from Essence it stated special guest appearance and of course I was curious to know who could this be. Well Winnie Mandela was magically raised up onto the stage. We gave the biggest and longest standing ovation. I’ve always been proud to be black since I can remember because my parents instilled that. Did you know Ms. Winnie Mandela was a fashion Icon? She was a prominent South African anti-apartheid activist and wife of Nelson Mandela she left us April 2, 2018 at the age of 81. Ms. Mandela was a champion for justice and equality a woman of royalty and a warrior she will never be forgotten.

Once Ms. Winnie Mandela finished her speech she chanted “Amandla” (power) with her fist up. I was so proud and my fist was all the way up. I was even more proud because I do believe Africa are my roots. This is Black History Month I salute Essence and Winnie Mandela.
